The Center for Community Health Leadership Grants Tampa Bay $3 Million to Build Connected Healthcare Community

The Center for Community Health Leadership, an organization sponsored by Misys Healthcare Systems, today announced the successful recipient of a $3 million grant of leading healthcare technology. The winner of this grant is Tampa Bay, Florida, who beat more than 90 other communities to win the grant. The Center for Community Health Leadership selected the Tampa Bay area as a Center grant recipient because of the area ’s reputation for healthcare excellence and their commitment to making the idea of community data sharing a reality. The Tampa Bay area, including several surrounding cities, is home to more than 3 million residents.

Tampa Bay is the second community to receive grants of electronic health record (EHR) software from the Center for Community Health Leadership, following New Haven, Connecticut. The software will enable caregivers in the Tampa Bay area to share information in a secure and appropriate way, leading to reduced costs, enhanced healthcare information adoption and more efficient and effective patient care.

MedVirginia Awarded NHIN Contract by Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)

U.S. HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt announced the award of contracts totaling $22.5 million to nine health information exchanges (HIEs), including Richmond-based MedVirginia, to begin trial implementations of the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).

According to HHS these contracts will create a secure foundation for basic health information exchange between select HIEs upon which more complex functions will be possible over time. This work will advance the nation toward the President ’s goal of most Americans having access to secure electronic health records by 2014, by creating a secure foundation for health information exchange. “These trial implementations are taking place in communities across America that are leading the way to health care transformation using secure, interoperable health information technology, ” Secretary Leavitt said. “Trial implementations of the Nationwide Health Information Network will bring us steps closer to a health IT system that will improve quality of care, increase efficiencies in health care, and improve disease prevention. ”
